Read it slowly. It doesn't say "if."

Most comfort sounds like a promise that the hard thing won't come. This verse is different.

"When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned." (Isaiah 43:2)

Not if. When.

God never promised you'd get to skip the flood. He promised you wouldn't be standing in it alone.

These words were spoken over people who were about to lose everything. Their homes, their city, their temple. They'd end up as exiles in Babylon. And during that same exile, three young men found out just how literal this promise was.

Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego refused to bow to the king's statue. So he had them thrown into a furnace heated seven times hotter than usual. Then the king looked in and couldn't believe his eyes. He counted four men walking around in the fire, untied and unhurt. When they came out, the Bible says not even the smell of fire was on them. (Daniel 3)

The fire was real. So was the One standing in it with them.

A wave rising up and breaking into flame, drawn like an old woodcut, with WHEN YOU PASS THROUGH THE WATERS arched over the top in weathered type and ISAIAH 43:2 underneath. Bone ink on washed black. It looks like a tour shirt from a band you wish you'd seen live.
